Green Tick of Approval for Flowcrete Floors
25 Oct 2019
- Flowcrete products certified compliant with Green Star
- Local VOC testing completed by CETEC Pty Ltd (Aus)
Flowcrete Australia have worked with local testing organisations to ensure that the key range of Epoxy, Polyurethane and Methyl Methacrylate resin flooring products are certified to meet local Australian green-building standards.
The greater emphasis on the environment and green-building practices is helping to educate manufacturers and consumers on the green credentials of their products, services and facilities. The name used when discussing environmentally friendly design and construction in Australia is The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) and the Green Star rating system.
According to the GBCA, ‘Our built environment is currently the world's single largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and also consumes around a third of our water, and generates 40 per cent of our waste. From individual buildings to entire communities, Green Star is transforming the way our built environment is designed, constructed and operated. Launched by the Green Building Council of Australia in 2003, Green Star is Australia's only national and voluntary rating system for buildings and communities. Green Star is helping to improve environmental efficiencies in our buildings, while boosting productivity, creating jobs and improving the health and well-being of our communities.’
The Green Star rating system provides a framework of best practice benchmarks for sustainability and sustainable design, construction and operation of buildings, fit-outs and communities using key rating tools. These rating tools cover a wide range of sustainable topics including energy and emissions.
Many types of floor coverings contain VOC’s including carpet, vinyl and resin-based flooring to name a few and the level of VOC content can vary greatly from floor covering to floor covering. There is a common misconception that all resin-based flooring materials contain high levels of VOC’s, however, this is not always the case and when it comes to resin flooring, not all materials emit the same level of VOC’s.
Paints and coatings used within the interior of a building seeking to meet Green Star requirements should not exceed limits for volatile organic compounds. This helps to reduce the number of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating, and/or harmful, improving the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants and helping to improve the green credentials of the buildings themselves.
Flowcrete Australia has been working with CETEC Pty Ltd (Aus) to locally test the VOC content of our popular epoxy, polyurethane and MMA resin-based flooring systems. According to the Green Building Council of Australia Green Star Design & As Built V1.2-13.1.1B and Green Star Interiors V1.2-12.1.1B specifications, TVOC contents should not exceed 140 grams per litre (g/L) of ready to use product. Flowcrete resin flooring products have tested as low as <1 (g/L).
The greater emphasis on the environment and green-building practices is helping to educate manufacturers and consumers on the green credentials of their products, services and facilities. Undertaking this local testing ensures that Architects, Engineers, Designers and Builders who are specifying Flowcrete flooring materials have the information they need to ensure that facility design meets these Green Star standards.
